The Private Sector in the United Kingdom requires 7-day 24-hour RMO cover according to the Care Standards Act. NES recommend you work an average of 48 hours per week, although it is still possible to work 168 hours per week provided that you sign an explicit clause that states that you 'opt-out' of Complying with the Working Time Regulations (WTR).
NES is committed to providing better working terms and conditions for RMOs. We have already implemented changes in our rotation system, by creating a new ABCD rotation system in compliance with the Regulations.
ABCD Rotations (Week of Days, Week off, Week of Nights, Week off).
RMOs work a week of 84 hours, with changeovers scheduled for 08:00 hours for start of day and 20:00 hours for start of night shift. This is working alongside one of your colleagues. The pay for this rotation is £1 512 per week, paid monthly.
The RMO rotations have for many years been worked on a full week basis (i.e. 168 hour shifts). The doctors who join up for these rotations sign an opt-out from the European Working Time Regulations so that they are not limited to a 48-hour working week.
We feel that while both hospitals and doctors actively request these working patterns, and while it remains lawful for us to provide the service on this basis, then we will continue to do so. We are well aware of the challenges posed by the Working Time Regulations and have even devised effective and rewarding working rotations that could be adopted in the event of their becoming necessary.
Other financial benefits include help with EPLS and ALS courses. You will also receive free accommodation at our RMO house in Aylesbury for your Meet and Greet. On duty you will benefit from free meals, accommodation and cover from the Medical Protection Society (MPS).
1:1 (One week on, one week off). RMOs work full week of 168 hours with changeovers scheduled for Monday 1200 hours. The pay for this rotation is £ 2000 per week paid monthly
2:1 (Two weeks on, one week off). RMOs work two full weeks of 168 hours, with changeovers scheduled for Monday 1200 hours. This can be either in a single client hospital or rotating between two. The pay for this rotation is £ 1750 per week paid monthly.
